NORRISTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The Montgomery County Department of Public Safety is launching a new app in an effort to fight crime.
Montgomery County is the first county in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania to have an anonymous crime tips app, called STOPit.
“It’s an anonymous tip app. They can download it on their phones and get us info,” said Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele. “We are hoping the community will join with us and be our partners in crime fighting.”
Users can text anonymous tips, including photos or videos, to the 911 Communications Center and Montgomery County law enforcement.
The crime tips app is a joint venture by the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
Steele said the app will greatly improve the county’s ability to curb the ever-growing epidemic of opioid and fentanyl use.
“We’re hoping people will give us crime tips on those out there dealing drugs in our communities,” he added. “We have a narcotics enforcement team and drug task force to help look into these important tips.”
