Loaded Gun Found at Montgomery High School
In a concerning incident at Montgomery High School, a teacher's prompt report of unusual student behavior led to the discovery of a loaded "ghost gun" in a gym locker on Friday. This is the second occurrence of a firearm being found on the school campus this year, highlighting the critical importance of vigilance and proactive reporting.
The weapon was found after a teacher noticed a student acting suspiciously during gym class. According to Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Patricia Seffens, the teacher observed the student placing items in their locker while another student appeared to block the view. This observation, paired with a previous tip reported through the district's STOPit anonymous app, spurred police to conduct a search that ultimately uncovered the unregistered 9mm handgun.
The student involved was arrested and is now facing multiple charges, including possession of an unregistered firearm and bringing a weapon onto school grounds. Principal April Santos praised the combined efforts of students, staff, and the anonymous reporting system in identifying and addressing the threat.
"It takes a community to keep our students safe," Santos said in a message to parents, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and timely reporting. She credited the STOPit app as a valuable tool in maintaining school safety and urged community members to continue using it to report any concerns.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of early intervention and the role technology can play in fostering safer school environments. The STOPit app and attentive school personnel were key in preventing a potentially dangerous situation.
